High potential and gifted education
All NSW public schools have a range of differentiated learning opportunities, enabling students to thrive and reach their potential.
High potential and gifted education is delivered in our schools through a combination of in-class, whole school and system level programs, practices and procedures.
The department is committed to ensuring equitable access to high potential and gifted education for all students, regardless of background or location.
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) at The Crescent School
At The Crescent School, our School for Specific Purposes (SSP) provides a nurturing and flexible learning environment that honours the unique strengths and potential of students with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities. We are dedicated to recognising and fostering high potential and giftedness in ways that are meaningful and accessible for every child.
Our Approach
- Our experienced staff share a common understanding of identifying potential in students with complex learning needs, ensuring every student’s abilities are acknowledged and supported.
- We collaborate closely with other SSPs to share expertise and develop tailored classroom resources that enhance learning opportunities for all students.
- Technology plays a vital role in our program, offering diverse and adaptable ways for students to engage, explore their talents, and progress at their own pace.
- We value the involvement of parents, carers, and the wider community, incorporating their insights and support to create personalised pathways for each child’s growth.
- Our teachers engage in ongoing professional development to deepen their skills in recognising and nurturing potential within the context of intellectual disabilities.

What is high potential and gifted education?
High potential and gifted education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies like enrichment, extension and acceleration
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high-potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE education in the classroom, in our school, and across NSW.

- Flexible groupings allow students to collaborate, share ideas, and participate in presentations that celebrate their strengths.
- Physical Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) include tailored movement activities that focus on skill development and enjoyment.
- Students are encouraged to take on leadership roles within the classroom to build self-esteem and social skills.
- Our classrooms provide safe, supportive spaces that foster confidence, resilience, and a willingness to take on new challenges.
